    Astros 5, Cardinals 1 (AP)

The Houston Astros know they are a long shot to make the playoffs. At least, the defending NL champions enjoyed the end of their road trip. Roy Oswalt pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning and Lance Berkman hit his 40th home run, helping the Astros bounce back from a dispiriting loss to beat the [...]

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder underwent surgery to repair a partial tear of his rotator cuff on Tuesday, and doctors said there were no surprises. “Everything went just fine,” said Cardinals team physician Dr. George Paletta, who assisted on the surgery with New York Mets team physician Dr. David Altchek.

Albert Pujols touched up Brad Lidge for another big hit Tuesday night, this time a broken-bat, two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning that gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 6-5 victory over Houston and handed the Astros an agonizing loss. Preston Wilson homered for the Cardinals, who have won the first two [...]

    Cardinals 6, Astros 5 (AP)

Albert Pujols broke his bat on a 1-2 fastball in on the hands from Brad Lidge. All that meant was that the winning hit, which handed the Houston Astros an agonizing loss, lacked a certain solid tone. Even without good wood Pujols got the best of Lidge again Tuesday night, this time hitting a two-run [...]

Rolen ejected for arguing called third strike (AP)

Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen was ejected for arguing a called third strike in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s game against the Houston Astros. Rolen objected to the call of home plate umpire Tim Tschida on an inside pitch from Dave Borkowski that may have caught the corner. He became more enraged after getting [...]

    Cardinals 7, Astros 0 (AP)

Chris Carpenter coasted into the playoffs last season. This year, he’s been dominant down the stretch. Carpenter threw a six-hitter and Ronnie Belliard had four RBIs, helping the St. Louis Cardinals take advantage of a fill-in starter in a 7-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Monday night. Carpenter has two complete games in his [...]

Isringhausen out at least until weekend (AP)

Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen received a cortisone shot for his ailing hip on Monday, and St. Louis said he won’t be used until the weekend. Isringhausen has not pitched since Wednesday, when he blew his career-high 10th save in 43 chances. After giving up two runs in the ninth inning of a 7-6 loss at [...]
